Delphi is name a of sacred site in ancient greece where people would travel to discern the truth about their futures.
Apollo squinted his eyes in the blinding sunlight. He calmly tensed his muscles as he drew back his bow. As released his arrows the Python's blood spilled and it's writhing body fell into a great crack in the earth. Python was a dragon that had guarded the hill for centuries until his fateful encounter with Apollo. The new god was triumphant in the epic battle, winning the right to call the hills of Delphi his sanctuary.
Delphi had been inhabited since Mycenaean times by small settlements who were dedicated to Gaia. The worship of Apollo as the god of harmony, light, and order was established and slowly over a few hundred years, Delphi became internationally known for the Oracular powers of Pythia. Pythia was a priestess who sat on a tripod over a fissure in the earth through which vapors arose and foretold the future. Such was the importance of the Oracle at Delphi that the ancients believed it to be the navel ("Omphalos") of the world.
The people had such faith in Pythia's view of the future that no major decision was made without first consulting the Oracle of Delphi. Greek and foreign dignitaries, heads of state, and common folk made the pilgrimage to the Delphi sanctuary, and paid great sums of money for Pythia's oracles
Pythia entered the inner chamber of the temple, sat upon a tripod and inhaled the gasses that escaped from a chasm in the porous earth. After falling into a trance, she muttered words that were incomprehensible to mere mortals. The priests of the sanctuary would interpret her oracles deliver them to those who had paid. The oracles were always open to interpretation and often embodied dual and opposing meanings. Such was the importance of the Oracle at Delphi that the ancients believed it to be the center ("Omphalos") of the world.
To commemorate the triumph of Apollo over the Python, the sanctuary organized the Pythian Games every four years which were athletic events much like the Olympics.
