Popularly known as the "Hunab Ku" or the "Galactic Butterfly", this design is often associated with Mayan observational astronomy, which, through the medium of advanced mathematical calculations, was based a complex, sophisticated, and very accurate calendar. While the precise origin of the symbol is obscure, it has nevertheless come to be recognized and venerated by many as a significant representation of the galactic alignment- an alignment between the December solstice sun with the equator of our galaxy, the Milky Way that occurs once every 26,000 years. Another popular interpretation is that the symbol represents the "naval of the universe", a retrospectively prophetic name the Mayans gave to the center of the galaxy, from which they believed all life and form had sprung forth from. Today, it is a widely held belief amongst astronomers that the back hole in the center of our galaxy is indeed the source of all composite matter.
