better late than never

better late than never

blue apatite, boulder opal, emerald, iolite cab, chrome tourmaline, sugilite cab, sapphire, herkimer, pink tourmaline on the side, sterling, fine silver, argentium sterling sheet.
this is a christmas present for my brother, and only two years overdue . . . it is my first foray into working with solder and sheet. i am really happy with how this piece turned out. it's flatter than a lot of my stuff has turned out, and i think the design is more sophisticated than most other stuff i've done. fabrication is really fun- i'm excited to get better at it. thanks to angela and little greg for the encouragement and help.
thanks for lookin! happy holidays!

botryoidal pink tourmaline

botryoidal pink tourmaline

Botryoidal Pink Tourmaline, .925, .999, 14k gold
Halfway through making this one, I got really discouraged. A lot of times I know I will be happy with a piece if it ticks me off during construction.
I like this one- it reminds me of fire, a little. I love using gold- this is one of the first pieces I've used it on. thanks for lookin!

drip one

drip one

indicolite, light blue tourmie, spinel, .999, .925, argentium.
This was the last piece i made before tucson- it didn't end up like the one in my head, but sometimes they happen the way they want- i used Fibonacci-inspired weaving in some places. this one is really flat, and i feel like it flows pretty alright and it isn't over-gaummed with wire, so i feel like this one is successful on a few fronts, despite its inconguence with what i intended. thakns for looking!!!

first attempt at symmetry

first attempt at symmetry

aqua, .925, .999, 18k gold.
This was my first attempt at symmetrical piece, and while this piece isn't too elaborate, it wasn't as daunting a task as I'd always imagined. I'll be doing more with symmetry in the future. The aqua scanned orange on the reverse pic, for some reason.

getting wet

getting wet

black opal, tanzanite, tanzanian diopside, .999, .925, aregentium.
this piece came out pretty clean and pretty flat- flatness being something i've been trying to work on. all-in-all i am pretty happy with this piece- the flow aspect of my work seems to be improving a lot. plenty of room for style and technique to evolve, to be sure, but i think this piece is pretty neat, and i am definitely encouraged by the outcome.

kyanite energy vortex

kyanite energy vortex

Kyanite (Brazil), Emeralds (Colombia) .925, .999, 10k palladium white gold.

This piece took me forever. It was one of the most frustrating pieces I've made to date, but I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. This was a challenging piece, and I put it down for a month, but I am definitely glad I picked it back up- I feel like it's one of the most rewarding pieces I've made so far, too. Thanks for lookin!

moldavite paisley project

moldavite paisley project

Moldavite (Czech, Czech 1) Spinel, .925, .999, 18k gold, platinum.

I really dig this piece. Perhaps i could have set the spinel differently, but over-all I really like this one. I am trying to make my stuff look more alive- I think this one came pretty close to what I wanted. I'd love to hear some comments, if anyone is bored at the 'puter :). thanks for lookin!

kyanite (vietnam), .925 and .999
I am trying to incorporate more swoopy weaving- this one is simple, but I think it is executed pretty well. I think overall my sense of flow and my ability to express it are getting better.

shwirl

shwirl

.925 and .999, black herkimer druze. i have been suffering from massive maker's block lately. it bites. this piece, however, turned out pretty cool. this is a new technique for me- i think the flow in this one goes better than a lot of my previous pieces. this piece was a custom for a friend. thanks for looking!

simple aqua elipse

simple aqua elipse

aquamarine, argentium, .925, .999.
this piece is pretty simple and straightforward production work. the scanner mistook the aqua for labradorite or something, but it is a normal, run-of-the-mill pale blue aqua- you can see a ittle wire-work through the crystal, but alas . . .

smallest to date

smallest to date

platinum, 18k yellow gold, 14k white gold, .925 sterling frame, emerald (colombia).

This is the smallest piece i've made so far. all exposed metal is gold or platinum- i'm pretty stoked about this piece- i used mostly 34 g wire, so it was frustrating a little at times, and the work was tedious and eye-straining, but i dig how this piece turned out. it's pretty clean, and small enough that it could be an earring.

squiddicle

squiddicle

indicolite, rubellite, emerald, heliodor.
argentium, .925, .999.

i am really happy with how this piece ended up- i almost abandoned ship partway through, but this ended up bein perhaps my favorite i've done so far. i think the compostition is better than anything i've done yet. some of the weaves incorporate Fibonacci numbers.
thanks for takin the time to look :)
anyone goin to az, have a safe trip! perhaps our paths will cross . . .

sugilite swirl

sugilite swirl

blue-green tourmaline, sugilite, aquamarine, herkimer diamond, argentium, .925, .999.
this piece doesn't have many crystals in it- i guess it ended up being more about the wire work. i am pretty happy with the flow of this piece- i think my sense of movement and ability to express it are slowly but surely getting better. i'd love some feedback if anyone out there is feeling overly energetic, but i know how it is . . . hope everyone's new year is off to a good start! thanks for lookin!

untitled

untitled

Sapphire (ceylon), tourmaline, herkimer diamond, spinel, aqua, .999, .925.

This piece had a will of its own. pretty self explanatory, I suppose. It ended up lookin pretty biomechanical, which I haven't done in a minute. Thanks for lookin!

heliodor and emerald

heliodor and emerald

heliodor, emerald (colombia), .925 and .999 silver, 14/20 gold filled, 10 KW palladium.
I am really happy with how this piece turned out. My favorite part is the way the emerald is set- it's a confidence booster. It would have been cooler if I could have afforded solid gold wire, which raises a question. Is it better to leave gold filled out and only work with solid gold, or is gold filled okay? I am not sure what I think about it . . .

rainbow piece

rainbow piece

phenakite, green tourmaline, purple scapolite, emerald (colombia), yellow apatite, rhodochrosite (peru), kyanite in the back, .925 and .999 silver, 14 K red gold, 10 KW palladium.
Overall, I am okay with how this turned out. I did some cool things, and I like the combination of all the metals. The 10 k palladium is 34 g, and I do all my coiling by hand, so that stuff takes a second. I wish the piece had more flow. It's a neat piece though, pretty intricate and sturdy, and the crystals buzz nice together. thanks for looking!

First nice one for Michael

First nice one for Michael

tsavorite, opal, kyanite, tourmaline, 2 aquas, 2 herkies, purple scapolite in the back. 3 1/8" x 1 1/2" (8 cm x 4 cm). 52.2 g (1.68 ozt). It's a little heavy and gaudy as all get out, but so is Michael. This is the first piece I did using a frame. It turned out cool, i think, and i like this technique, but I think I need to cut the size down in the future, as I left a lot of space to fill. Overall though, I think this piece looks pretty decent.

A tanzanite piece for myself

A tanzanite piece for myself

This is a piece I made for myself in time to wear to Gratefulfest at the NLQP this year. I've been hanging on to these crystals for a while, waiting until I thought I could do them justice; not sure if I did or not- sure hope so!

stones: (front) tanzanite, black opal, aquamarine, tourmaline, Herkimer, (back) demantoid garnet, spinel, emerald

acid-etched aqua

acid-etched aqua

This is no doubt one of my favorite pieces I've made. It is a single acid-etched aqua with a key in it. For the checker-boarding on the right side, I used the Fibbonacci sequence, which I'd like to keep using. This piece turned out better than I'd hoped. It isn't really reversible, but the back was pretty clean.

scapolite & tourmaline

scapolite & tourmaline

This is one of the first multi-stone wraps I did. I like stuff that looks like it came out of fantasy movies. I think I was watching The Dark Crystal when I made this. I think I was also watching David Bowie's package bounce around the screen in Laberynth while this one was happening too. Anyhow, puppets are cool!

Periodot Paisley

Periodot Paisley

peridot, demantoid garnet, imperial topaz.

This was the first piece wherein I tried to wrap a small crystal. It worked out pretty well. I really was stoked about how this one turned out. It also had half-round wire along the underside of the bail to protect it. That was a B*, but worth it in the end. i don't know who the first person to do that was, but I hope it's considered common knowledge now- not tryin to rip off anyone's good idea. (I tell people that I picked that idea up from someone else, btw.)

topaz & heliodor

topaz & heliodor

imperial topaz, heliodor floater, kyanite in the back. I like the colors in this piece. I like that this piece is cool to look at from almost any angle- sorry I only got two of them in the pics.

little green tourmaline

little green tourmaline

simple sterling and fine silver piece- i really like this tourmaline- it isn't super gemmy or anything, but the color is sweet. i like the way this one ended up. i've been trying to improve my sense of movement- this one came closer to the idea in my head than a lot of other pieces had.

kyanite (brazil), rhodonite (brazil), tanzanite, .925, .999, argentium. so far, this piece has been referred to as a sailboat, a leaf, and a vagina. i wasn't really goin for any of those things, but cheers! thanks for lookin! (out of space to type more)

My name is nick. I am 27 years old and I live out in the cut in Southeast Ohio. I have been collecting rocks since I was 15, and I started making jewelry about 16 months ago. Since then, I've become really boring because this is about all I want to do. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me with their kind words, constructive criticism, and tips. Also, thanks to all the metalworkers.org artists whose work consistently baffles and inspires me. :) Please leave me comments- I'm after some feedback!
